A MomPreneur - Necessity is the ‘Mother’ of Invention

This is a great story of an individual, in this case a Mom who had a need, saw a solution and went off and built a business around it.   Was it quick journey? No, but with smarts and perserverance and a great deal of help the company is growing very rapidly.

While pregnant in 1990, Lisa Jarrett discovered a prenatal education curriculum that she had read about in a medical journal. After becoming a huge fan of the curriculum and using it during her three subsequent pregnancies, Lisa found out that she was nearly the only woman who knew about it and that you couldn’t buy it anywhere at retail – only from the developmental psychologist who created it.

So in 1998, Lisa acquired the rights to the BabyPlus Prenatal Education System (www.babyplus.com) to bring the product and its benefits to expectant mothers everywhere. Today, over 100,000 families worldwide have used the curriculum and it is sold at retailers nationwide.

Lisa founded Indianapolis-based BabyPlus Company and streamlined the audio device to make it more mom-friendly and comfortable. As more parents-to-be around the world learned about the curriculum through parent testimonials and word of mouth, Lisa’s business experienced incredible growth.

Now with placement on the shelves of over 200 stores, including A Pea in the Pod and Mimi Maternity, BabyPlus has transcended cultural differences with 20 percent of overall revenue coming from international sales. This year, Lisa projects that revenue will grow 720 percent over 2001 and May 2007 sales alone showed an increase of 300 percent from May 2006!

Lisa was simply a mother who believed in a product enough to take it global.

Just goes to show that if you beleive enough in yourself and the product you are trying to sell…it does work. Hats off to Lisa!
