Discipline – Do You Have What It Takes To Succeed?

discipline to succeedOne of the most difficult aspects of working from home is discipline.  Success hinges on sticking to your goals and completing tasks.  A lack of discipline can result in a downward spiral that can eventually lead to a complete failure.  So how do you stay on track?  How can you make sure that you set goals and stick with them no matter what?  Here are 6 Small Things You Can Do When You Lack Discipline written by Leo Babauta.

One key factor mentioned in the list is motivation.

3. Focus on motivation. What’s your motivation for pursuing the goal or habit? How will you sustain the motivation when you struggle? Have very strong motivations for doing something, and write them down. Commit publicly. When things get tough, remind yourself of your motivation. Focus on it. It’ll pull you along — that’s more powerful than trying to focus on the push of discipline.

I’ve found that doing just that can get you past any obstacle if you focus on what will come of completing your task.  If you can see the finish line, you tend to buckle down and forge forward to the end.  Do you have your own tips for staying focused and disciplined?

I think another key is scheduling time for things.

If you schedule it, it happens … when you don’t, it won’t.

Perfect timing Amanda! This is my most difficult problem. When I lost focus, discipline comes after. And those tips are really helpful. Thanks for pointing that out to me. ;)

So true JD. You tend to accomplish more things when you set aside specific time to do it. I have found that true for myself too.

If you schedule it, it happens … when you don’t, it won’t. — Exactly! It does give impact that you really set time for each and every single task that you are going to do. If not, you’ll always be in the state of ‘come what may’

I am better focused when I don’t have the interruptions; working from home I find I have to be very disciplined about not getting distracted (phone, dogs, family, laundry, etc.).

To have discipline we need to be a disciple of discipline. We need to do it everyday with all our might. Practice makes perfect.
