Manage Your Business While Still Enjoying Your Vacation

mixing business with vacationHopefully the economy hasn’t ruined your plans for a summer vacation this year.  However, during your week away you will most likely find yourself unable to completely detach yourself from your business.  So, how can you get away to relax and enjoy your vacation without neglecting your small business?  I found some good advice on this topic in the Men With Pens blog article, How To Mix Business and Pleasure on Vacation.

You can’t just go on vacation and not work.

You’ll need to check your email, or make sure your site is running smoothly, or supervise the person you’ve trusted to pick up the slack. Much as you’d want to, you can’t just go on vacation and disappear for two weeks.

I don’t see anything wrong with taking an hour out each day to quickly check over things back home.  It’s a necessary evil of running your own business.  Keep it limited to a very small time frame and avoid inconveniencing anyone else on the trip.  Will you still conduct business when you’re on vacation this summer?

I absolutely plan to check my business while on vacation.

In fact, the reason I can take vacation is because of daily business monitoring, so I won’t stop while traveling.

What I find to be wonderful is that the work I do while on vacation seems to be streamlined better when I’m away versus in the office. I do all of the work in one quarter of the time.

Sounds as though I’m missing out on crafting a plan for more vacations.

Cool list of tips. You’re right Amanda, there’s nothing wrong if you set an hour to check on what’s happening back home or in your office. What’s important is you have a trusted staff to take over you on those days you’re not around. Train and prepare them very well for the challenge then you can enjoy the rest of your vacation.

I believe in working in advanced when possible, and checking email once or twice a day when on vacation. I wasn’t always able to separate work from vacation time but now I am.

Wow good to hear that DJ! I seldom hear from entrepreneurs that they were able to do that. Keep it up! ;)

I also do work ahead of time to prepare. That way I can relax and all I have to do is quickly check emails and visist my sites to make sure everythings running smoothly. It’s almost impossible to not do at least that while you are away.

It’s a good idea to stay in touch, but it’s also critical not to allow yourself to become so immersed in work that you forget you’re on vacation.

I will not have a regular vacation this year, but it great to keep in touch during your break, if you want. But it is also important to understand the function of the “on/off” button at certain times… ;)
