Microsoft Unveils Free Antivirus Software For Windows Users

microsoft security essentialsExciting news!  Yesterday, September 29, Microsoft announced the availability of the new Microsoft Security Essentials.  If you haven’t heard already, Microsoft Security Essentials is “real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software“.  OK, nothing new right?  We can get the same thing from McAfee or Norton right?  Not exactly.  Microsoft Security Essentials is FREE to Windows users!

I think this is an awesome offering.  It can be challenging to some people to keep up with subscriptions to several software services.  It always seems like money is constantly going out for this or that.  So for those people who have neglected anti-virus software because they can’t afford it, this is good news for them.  You simply download the software and it will run in the background and automatically update.

Sounds like a no fuss service.  So sit back, relax and know that you are protected.  Only time will tell exactly how this compares to other anti-virus software.

You can find more information and download Microsoft Security Essentials for free here…

Finally, Microsoft is starting to realize that free offerings can help your image in the marketplace as well as your bottom line. Just in time for the upcoming Windows 7 launch as well.

This is a great thing! I’ve always wondered why computers don’t come with free security software installed. Maybe this will finally open that door.

When will they release it? I have to check out the site… I wonder how the other antivirus software companies will react on this.
