Generate More Sales By Giving Back To Your Community

give back this holiday season

Are you looking for a way to generate more sales?  Consider the advice given by Janet Meiners Thaeler in her most recent OPEN Forum piece, “How to Avoid the ‘Bah Humbug’ Spirit From Consumers This Holiday Season“.  Janet suggests considering “cause related marketing”.

There’s nothing like giving to get you in a holiday mood. Your customers will see your human side and you’ll give to your community. It’s a winning marketing strategy.

Lisa Williams from MEDIA forte marketing told me about Oregon Growers in Hood River. Here’s what they are doing. They will donate a jar of marionberry jam to the Oregon Food Bank for every order they get through December 31st. They are also donating jam to anyone who becomes a fan of their Facebook page. Additionally they are coordinating gift baskets from Hood River farmers and producers of local food to go to the food bank. Then they will leverage social media by getting bloggers involved by giving them recipes that use Oregon products.

I find this a win, win situation.  Not only are you giving to those in need but you’re making a nice profit as well.  This would definitely be a factor for me when choosing who to do business with especially during the holiday season.  I’m more likely to stand by a company when I know that someone less fortunate will benefit from me doing business with them.  Does your company have any plans to give back this holiday season?

You’re welcome Lisa. Do you find that cause related marketing a growing trend?

How does marionberry taste? I am fan of sea-buckthorn and aronia berries.

Amanda: I have to challenge you regarding the duty to “give back” to the community? This idea could lead to dangerous consequences. It is important to remember this during these times. 20 years ago, the Berlin Wall fell. In the “Deutsche Demokratische Republik” you had to give back to the community all the time. Your own life was not worth anything.

Please note that I am not against charity or that you voluntarily give away things as “cause related marketing”, but the thing is that these actions could only happen if we defend the free market system on a philosophical basis. The starting point of a business community is the individual and a specific company. The individual and the company have the rights to their fruits of their labor.

    Amanda,
Thank you for this writeup - I found out about Lisa’s efforts through Twitter. With a lot of people hurting this year I encourage companies to look for ways to trade their services, time or product to help organizations that reach people in need.

I want to invite everyone to a webinar I’m doing with PRWeb about online publicity. This is one of the tips I’ll be talking about. It doesn’t cost and is focused on practical how to tips.

    Here’s the tweet

    Janet,
You’re welcome. I agree that if we all did a little bit, it would make a huge impact. Your webinar sounds interesting, I’ll have to see if I can attend. I retweeted it for you too. ;)
