VPNs and The Law

A Virtual Private Network can be used by a number of people for a number of reasons. Contrary to popular belief, individuals don’t only use VPNs to access untoward content or partake in illegal activity.

VPN laws

As long as people are using them for legitimate purposes, there is not a problem with using a VPN. You also want to make sure that you are using one that, itself, is abiding to the law. Finding a company that operates in line with the US laws in relation to the internet, media, and service providers can help you to stay legal when using a VPN.

VPNs and Security

Whether you use public wi-fi services in stores or internet cafes, or your own private network at home, you may be worried about your anonymity or even information leaks. If you get a VPN for free (e.g without paying) you can help keep your identity and location safe because, as far as the internet is aware, you are in an entirely different location. This can be especially useful if you want to avoid becoming a victim of cyber-crime or other online attacks.

You can also access paid VPNs for an added level of security but, for general day to day browsing, a free VPN should be able to give you that basic level of cover that you need.

Why Else People Use Them

Some people opt to use VPNs because of their ability to reduce internet lag. This can affect the quality of any games or media that you want to watch, as well as your ability to connect to the site or content in the first place.

Others may also want to be able to access content that is not generally available in their state, or even country. For example, if there is a movie that you want to see, but it is only available in the United Kingdom, you may be able to use a VPN to make your internet connection believe that you are in the UK, and therefore able to watch your movie.

The Law in the United States

Using a VPN is completely legal as a citizen of the United States. Even if you travel to another country, such as the aforementioned UK, where VPNs are legal, this will still not be a problem.

Legal issues can arise when you use the VPN to commit forms of crime. One example of this would be to use a VPN to download copyrighted material, which is already a crime without the use of the VPN. In short, any activity deemed illegal or immoral without a VPN would still remain illegal when using one. In addition to this, a VPN will also not prevent you from being found or prosecuted for the activity, meaning it cannot be used as a means to try and circumvent the law.

To summarise, using a VPN can be a great way to access content and protect your identity while online. It can allow you to broaden the amount of media you have access to, so long as this media is coming from services that operate legally.
