I really enjoyed your article. However the retainer model seems to price a lot of small businesses out of the mix. PR Firms really need to move to an a-la-carte business model to make public relations affordable for small startup firms in this economy.

For some CEOs you might suggest a blog as a form of business outreach. For some businesses traditional PR is effective, but more and more our individual capacity to generate interest and authority online is growing.

Good post. I agree that for many SMBs, PR is within reach (and do-able "in-house"). I like your concluding thoughts about closely reading authors' content as one of the most important parts of the engagement process. Too few people that try to do PR actually bother to READ the content of the authors they are pitching. When you do so, the angles become that much more obvious, and it's just a much more respectful / effective approach.

This is a nice piece but for small business owners this may take alot of time to even research these information. It will be nice to fine where to get information aggregated for use.

Pitching to PR folks can also be very intimidating and daunting task for business owners.

Great tips. I think they apply not only to CEO's PR, but to the PR of the whole business. I agree that PR pays off much better than marketing. But creating quality PR can be tricky.

John Sternal, guest author at Small Business CEO, lays out some basic ideas about how your company can get PR. Frankly, from my perspective after 18 years on the other side as a reporter, his suggestions for getting stuff into the paper seem a bit naiv...

I really can see the importance of building a good relationship. It's a PR foundation I should say.

As a former TV news reporter and anchor, I totally agree with your suggestions.
Free PR via a news story is priceless.
In fact, I'm always looking for small business owners and entrepreneurs to profile on my blog: www.entrepreNEWS.biz.

It is time to challenge regular PR. I recommend you to read Stefan Engeseth's new book, The Fall of PR and the Rise of Advertising. You could download it for free (PDF version) on his site (DetectiveMarketing.com).
